Just as other areas of education are moving online, you can enroll in phlebotomy online classes too. Online phlebotomy training offers a flexible study schedule and allows you to further your education while juggling family obligations or a part-time or full-time career. And you can’t beat the commute.

But buyer beware.

Before enrolling in courses for phlebotomy certification online, you must ensure that the program is accredited. Otherwise, you will be wasting your time. Completing online phlebotomy training is not the same as participation in an offline course.

To be eligible for phlebotomy certification online and off, students are required to complete a phlebotomy training program. You should only consider accredited phlebotomy programs. These are ones awarded accreditation through the U.S. Department of Education, the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NAACLS), or similar.

As with traditional phlebotomy courses, hands-on clinical experience is required to qualify for phlebotomy certification. Your online phlebotomy training program should help you set up an internship or provide hands-on training sessions in how to work with a needle to draw blood from patients of all ages – whether they are infants, children, adults, or senior citizens.

Here’s a good example of how the online phlebotomy classes work with the offline: Southwestern Community College in Sylva, N.C., offers a phlebotomy course online over the first eight-weeks of the semester. Hands-on labs are offered on campus during those first eight weeks, and clinical rotations take place in the semester’s second eight weeks. The clinical education is provided at cooperating hospitals or other healthcare facilities. Emphasis is placed on attaining competency and proficiency in the performance of phlebotomy procedures. This hybrid offline and online phlebotomy training merges the learning with hands-on skills.

There are many benefits to obtaining your phlebotomy certification. Phlebotomy certification is not required by law in the United States, except in California and Louisiana. But keep in mind that most employers like hospitals, clinics, and labs will hire only those phlebotomists with certification. Offline or online phlebotomy training shows employers that you are schooled in the basics of blood collection, anatomy and physiology, waste disposal, and other standards. And it shows that you are familiar with protocols established by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
