University of Utah

Location: Salt Lake City, Utah

Openings per year: 6

Highlights: The University of Utah Hospital is the only hospital in the Intermountain West that offers in-patient neurology and neurosurgical critical care, giving residents exposure to unusual cases. About 75 percent of graduating residents continue on to neurology fellowship training, while the remaining 25 percent enter private practice. The program is particularly family-friendly, with a committee dedicated to helping spouses and significant others find job contacts and opportunities in the Salt Lake City area.

Case Western Reserve University

Location: Cleveland, Ohio

Openings per year: 10

Highlights: The Case Neurology Residency Program is a four-year categorical program that includes one year of internal medicine training. Residents are exposed to a diverse patient population at University Hospitals Case Medical Center and the VA Medical Center. The program is committed to strong mentorship and teaching, and the vast majority of residents continue on to additional fellowship training at the most competitive programs in the country.

Thomas Jefferson University

Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Highlights: There are seven four-year categorical program spots and two spots for entering PGY-2s. Thomas Jefferson University is home to one of the few academic headache centers in the world, and offers clinical research opportunities focused on headache, stroke, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and degenerative disease.

Rush University Medical Center

Location: Chicago, Illinois

Openings per year: 8

Highlights: Residents have the opportunity to serve a highly diverse patient population and treat a wide range of neurological issues through rotations at both Rush University Medical Center and Stroger Hospital of Cook County, an affiliated public health care facility. This program provides excellent training in inpatient and outpatient neurology and prepares residents for successful careers in both private practice and academic medicine.

Medical University of South Carolina

Location: Charleston, South Carolina

Highlights: TheMUSC Neurology residency program is a four-year categorical program that includes one year of internal medicine training. As the largest medical center in the state, MUSC receives referrals from all over South Carolina. In addition to providing in-patient, pediatric, and consult services, residents manage a group of patients in their own longitudinal neurology clinic from PGY2 to the end of PGY4.
