Caribbean School update

Postby CaribMD » Sat Dec 13, 2014 3:58 pm

Hi, I wanted to update my advice on Caribbean Medical Schools

There are 3 Caribbean Medical Schools that are part of the LCME of the USA: Ross, American University of the Caribbean (AUC) and St. George's University (SGU). All three of these require MCATs to Apply and you will have a chance at a residency post graduation. I feel these 3 are safe to borrow money attend if you cannot get accepted to US school (US MD or DO is always better than any Caribbean school). SABA is a 4th choice non LCME school that requires MCAT but has waived it in the past.

Other Schools
St. James ( Bonaire) and Aureus ( Aruba) I know about are both are IMED listed.
Any school that is not IMED and WHO listed should not be attended, one cannot sit for the USMLE in the US.
Any school banned in a US state may pose License and Residency problems.
Only schools on California's approval list will be allowed a residency and or license in California

These are the major issues in deciding a school.

So would I have gone to a Caribbean school again?

Don't think so after
RN 20 years
Medical school
Steps 1,2,CS and 3 passed
Still no residency

If I would have gone to a US School this would not have happened

Hi there,

After reading your blog and this post, I am having a lot of doubts about even thinking about going to Caribbean Medical School. I know that you worked hard during your time on the island but I am wondering if there was an issues of grades or mark on the USMLE step 1 that has played a part in your not getting a residency ? I know that is a heavy question and if you do not feel like answering it, I will completely understand.

Sorry to hear Bill !!!
Having gone the Carib route myself from 2007-11 and succeeded, at this point, I would have to agree with CaribMD and would not recommend it.

Things are looking up for me this year but I still think its way better to try and get into a US medical school if you want to practice in the US
