brody school of medicine (East Carolina University)

I interviewed with 2 adcomm members. A PhD and an OB/GYN.

Questions:

1) tell me about yourself.

2) why medicine?

3) Why doctor as opposed to nursing?

4) In an hypothetical situation, if i was 42 and still trying to get into med school after all this years, what will i be doing or will I do?

5) if i had a chance for a do-over, what will i do differently?

6) rate these 3 words in order of importance to you: compassionate, integrity and intellectual.

7) what will i do to improve my standardized test taking skills?

most question came from my first interviewer. My second interviewer was a very relaxed man (the OB/GYN). We talk about how he went to france to trace back is ancestors to senegal.

and gave me some good advice about life. He only asked two questions (2 and 5).

it was aight! overall.

Now i need to start praying!

im very interested to see what you answered for the ranking of the three words (compassionate, integrity and intellectual.)

when i read that in my mind i immediately said:
1. compassionate
2. intellectual
3. integrity

which I dont think would have looked so good to the interviewers....:s

that's exactly what i said. Someone later told me they would have preferred it if i said integrity first, followed by compassion and intellectual.

The logic i was given is that since my interviewer was a black female in a high position, integrity will mean much to her than compassionate.

On the other hand, i was raised outside of USA, so i might not have understood what it takes for her as a female and african american to get to such a high level.

The explanation sound reasonable to me, but i went with what i felt not what i know.

what's your take.

im also not from the u.s.a, and the whole woman with an african american background liking the answer of integrity more would have escaped my mind completely too!

however, im guessing that with a question like this its not the rankings that really matter, but if you can explain yourself or at least think it through logically.

I put compassion first because thats my first thought when it comes to anyone in the career of medicine!
