This is absolutely before taxes. You end up paying close to 50% of that salary in taxes between federal income taxes, Medicare taxes, Social Security taxes, state income taxes (unless you live in AK, FL, NH, NV, SD, TN, TX, WA, or WY), property taxes, and local income taxes (if you live in a larger city.)

I'm guessing every other state has income taxes except the states that you've just listed?

Yes, and some are quite high. Hawaii and Oregon's state income tax rates go up to 11% and California's goes to 10.3%. Ouch!

Thanks. Also, could someone tell me the ranges of the top salaries? For an exmaple, I know the salaries of interventional radiologists and orthopedic surgeons, but in real life this doesn't seem right. I've heard both jobs could make over $1 million.. So can someone explain this to me? And if that is right can someone tell me which physician's salary could range the highest?

I mean, not to be materialistic, but I see many orthopedic surgeon's houses and they probably gross up to 300k to 500k, but I've seen many interventional radiologist's houses that gross up to $1 million or higher. (mostly I've seen atlanta, ga) I don't understand. Can a radiologist make more than an orthopedic surgeon...?
