Still possible?

Postby HitBDCman » Mon Dec 14, 2009 11:28 pm

I have had a terrible year and my GPA has dropped significantly.

I now plan on applying next year but will have a GPA of about 3.2-3.3

Do I have a shot if I do well on the MCAT?

Also I have 400+ hours of volunteering and 100+ clinical experience in an ER. Don't know if that will help.

Hi,

Yes you have a shot at DO schools with that GPA, MCAT needs to be around 30.

If the MCAT score is below 30 on practice tests do not take it
If you get lower then 30 then you would be better off studying hard on it and then retake it, but do this after senior year since you have to bring up the GPA too.

There is no set timeline and that is a trap so many fall into, they think if they do not apply in Junior year then medical school is over, its one dimensional thinking and is 100% wrong, you chances are better when better prepared to apply, when you have better stats, time is on your side not against you.

Thank you for the reply.

I'm not really in a rush but I'll be in college for about 5 years total already, and applying my senior (final) year would mean another year of waiting. I know the road to becoming a physician is a long one and I would like to get married and have a family sometime before or even a little after 30.

I will work hard at raising my GPA. There are a few 1-2 credit courses I could take that would be easy A's, would the DO schools not approve of this "GPA padding?".

grade padding is retaking courses over and over not the course you take.

Somehow this great myth of easy and hard gets pushed around a lot.

No A is "easy" you work for it and the schools look at it that way.

Padding is when you take chem 101 3 times to get an A finally, of course you should do better the second and third time you already took it once. The true test is the first time.

I don't think you can even retake a course twice. AT least, at my school, you need approval to do it and that's not easy to get.

But to take additional courses, that's fine I think, even if it's an easy A (as in, you don't need to work your head off to get the A)
