What type of additional stats will I need?

Postby astrodude » Mon Feb 01, 2010 8:55 pm

Hello, I am currently a junior Chemistry BA major. My current statistics are around 3.6 science and cumulative GPA's. Additionally, I have 7 years of clinical experience, encompassing shadows of both MD and DO practitioners. I have done research and should be getting published into two journals by the end of this year. I will have LOR from my research adviser, MD/DO doctors, and a variety of other teachers (varying from chemistry, biology and english).

I am curious how competitive my statistics are thus far? In addition to my GPA, I have taken overload semester hours for the past 2 semesters, if that makes any difference. I will be graduating with around 175 or so credit hours, if not more. Providing I perform well in the following semesters, both GPA's should be around 3.7 when I apply, as I am going to be retaking a course this summer that I received a "D" in.

I have started studying for the MCAT, hope to take it in April, but am not entirely sure if that will be possible yet--obviously I want to do as well as possible, but I think a 30 is a feasible score for me, based off the practice tests I have had so far.

What do you think? Thanks for the advice!

That's pretty good I would think. Though you have that one "D" that doesn't look good, but if you can pull out an "A" on it I think you'll be ok.

I don't know how well your chances are at the top medical schools, but you have a really good shot at getting in somewhere :D

You probably want to also think about your personal statement you will have to be writing, that's important too. If you have a good personal statement, it may help give you an edge over some other applicant that's similar to you in terms of their stats and whatnot.

I agree with other posters. Take the MCAT first. While its d whole pic med sch look at, each individual factors can either make or break you. In addition to all of ur research experience, how about volunteer work? Afterall, someone might claim medicine is a self-less act, so they need to see an example of that.

That been said, i think u are def on the right path. Seem to have a good work ethic. keep working hard, do well on MCAT. Put alot of energy into ur personal statement, It can go a long way.

good luck
