I am planning on attending Medical College of Georgia for Occupational therapy and I was wondering if anyone had any advice on stress. I plan on having a child on the way while I'm in school and I'm asking for advice and people who have been in the same situation.

well, my partner and I are wanting to have a family soon and the biological clock is ticking with her...just seems like medical school is putting a hold on our life and we talked about how we could handle having a child while I'm still in school. But we would wait until my last year of school to conceive so might not even be born til' I'm done with school. Just was wanting some advice from someone who have had children while they're in medical school. I know it can be done, just wanted some advice from some med school parents.

I understand my feeling is unless your over 35 you should wait. Children require a lot of attention and its better when out of school and working, while many have had children in school it a lot of added stress and the person going to school is missing out on the time with the child. I guess I should post that I'm 45 and looking back and if your under 25 I feel you have time.

My sister just had a child at 43 years of age, not that I think that is a good age. Biologically and emotionally 25 to 35 is the best time IMHO.

My kids are older but as now I have little time to spend with them while I study, we have had a few days during the holidays but to prepare for the Board exams I spend weeks alone studying.

Are you studying Occupational Health or Medicine? there is a big difference in the stress.

You know, I probably wouldn't wait till your done with school if your concerned about time.

Occupational therapy programs are challenging, but you're not looking at 7-15 years of med school and residency. Do you already have an undergrad degree and going back to grad school for the OT degree?

In my experience doing a bunch of things, stress comes from the fear of being unprepared. If you structure your study time and protect your family time you can treat studying like a job. work 40-50 h/week and do well, spend the rest of the time with your family.
