Im currently in a Clinical Assistance course provided by a premed club at my university which is sponsored by our COM. In the course we learn several things such as phlebotomy, EKG, Triage, Vital signs..basically all things to be able to help in a clinical setting. After the course is done, we get sent out on an externship of our choice. These range from going to Pediatrics, Cardiology ect ect..
anyways, I'm not sure which to take. Im really interested in going to the General Surgery externship since I will get a chance to witness surgeries on a day to day basis, however I won't get much actual " patient interaction " since ill just be standing there watching surgeries. The other option I may do is go to a Free Clinic where I will get nonstop patient interaction while drawing blood, triage and so on..which would ultimately be the smart externship to take? In essence, I feel the free clinic will provide greater hands on exposure..but the surgery sounds awesome...any advice?
