Chances of Getting In to Med Schools

Postby ben56 » Thu Nov 05, 2009 12:04 am

Hi,
I'm a junior at Indiana University. I'm a biology major and I have a 3.5 overall GPA and 3.5 GPA in my major. However, I got a B in both Organic I and Inorganic I. Right now I'm Organic 2 and Organic Lab and it's looking like I'll get a B in those as well. I've done shadowing and volunteering at a hospital and in other things.
Assuming I get an MCAT score of around 31-32, what do you think my chances would be of getting in a low-mid tier med school? I'm trying to figure out if I should continue or if my grades have taken me out of contention :?

Thanks,
Ben

You're a good candidate for the mid range. If you're aiming for the low-tier schools, I think you'll make it with your stats. But why aim so low? Aim high so if you miss, you'll miss low.

Agree with above. Lots of people get Bs in organic chemistry, its a very hard class. A 3.5 is a decent gpa. You will really have to work hard to get a 31-32 on the MCAT, easier said than done. (You're talking 90th percentile) Make sure the rest of you application is in order and apply broadly, like 15+ schools.

I agree you look good.
From AMCAS:AMCAS GPAs are almost always different from those calculated by the schools you have attended. Therefore, AMCAS does not in any way attempt to compare our calculations with those appearing on your official transcripts.
