My chances of getting into med-school?

Postby johnwatkins17 » Thu Oct 29, 2009 4:08 pm

Hello, this is my first visit to this site. I am currently attending a Junior College in Oklahoma and play golf there. My GPA is 3.10 at the moment, and should come up after this semester. I have with-drawn from one class (biology) after I failed to complete the online sector of the first grading term. I plan to transfer to the University of Oklahoma after this year. I know a 3.10 GPA even if I can manage to get it up to a 3.35 or 3.4 from a JuCo is fairly frowned upon. I heard that extra-curriculars are helpful. If I can manage to maintain a 3.4 GPA at OU what are my chances of getting in. I read that their students are encouraged to have and maintain a 3.5.

Any advice would be appreciated. (advice on MCAT would be helpful)

Welcome

I will be honest

a 3.4 is barely enough to apply to MD schools
Its fine for DO schools

so you will have to either bring it up to the 3.5 or better (average MD school is 3.5 to 3.6 and 32 MCAT) or Plan on US DO schools with Caribbean back up.

That will be how it goes.

If MD is the main dream in the US then if you are 3.1 to 3.4 you can do a post bac after undergrad.

You will need

300 hours of Volunteering
Patient contact experience
Shadowing a Doc

These three are essential

Good Luck

In Oklahoma there is no better undergraduate pre-medical program than Oklahoma Christian University in Edmond, OK. I'm in my first senior year and have seen a 90-100% acceptance rate to medical school in my time here. I've even seen guys with a 3.3 GPA get into OUHSC without ever going on the waitlist. Also we have out-of-state guys get accepted all the time. Your religious affiliation (or lack thereof) should not hinder you from attending a school with a religious affiliation (my general zoo/botany professor was a Darwinist if that helps) even if it is just for the program they offer. I won't lie, the program is rough and I've spent many a late night in the library or in my apartment when I could be doing something else. Basically if you can get through the program here then you are set.

Message me if you have any questions about the school or hit up the web site
