Surgical technicians also known as "surgical technologists" are key healthcare professionals whose responsibilities primarily revolve around assisting in surgeries under the direction of surgeons or registered nurses. They can be defined as the key members of an operation room group, which commonly include anesthesiologists, surgeons and circulating nurses. These surgical technicians are professionals who help in preparing the operation room by setting up surgical equipments, sterile drapes and sterile solutions. They are considered to be key employees of any surgical clinics where their responsibilities mainly include sterilizing the operation room for surgery.
During surgery, they are the professionals who assist surgeons by passing instruments and other sterile supplies. Besides this, at times, their responsibilities may even include preparing the patients for surgery by disinfecting incision sites. At times, they may even require perform duties like retracting the patient's tissues and suturing incisions. They even assist in the preparation and dispose of specimens taken for laboratory analysis and assist in applying dressings.
Today if we talk in terms of career prospects then the numerous opportunities are out. The job profile of a surgical technologist is not like any other "regular" job. Being as a surgical technician, you would be working with and around other medical professions that may help you advance your career to all new levels that you might not even be think of like Surgical First Assistant or a Laser Safety Officer.
So if you are looking to make a career in this profession it is important to get a proper training from an accredited allied health education school. And adding to this, you may also require meeting the essential requirements such as a high school diploma or equivalent (GED) and satisfactory score on the ACT or a Health Profession Pre-Admission exam.
